The ancient Sri Mallikarjuna Temple in Mrugavadhe
The Mythological Significance
Mrugavadhe holds a special place in Hindu mythology and is deeply connected to the epic Ramayana. This sacred village is where one of the most significant events of Lord Rama's forest exile took place.
The Story of Maricha
According to the Indian Hindu scripture "Ramayana", Mrugavadhe is the place where the demon Maricha, who came in the form of a golden deer (Swarna Mriga), was slain by Lord Rama. This event was orchestrated by Ravana as part of his plan to abduct Sita Devi.
When Sita saw the beautiful golden deer, she was enchanted by its beauty and requested Rama to capture it for her. Rama, suspecting it might be a demon in disguise, still went after the deer to fulfill Sita's wish. The deer led Rama far away from their hermitage, and when Rama shot his arrow, Maricha revealed his true demonic form and cried out "Sita! Lakshmana!" in Rama's voice before dying.
Installation of the Shivalinga
After slaying the demon Maricha, Lord Rama, being deeply spiritual and following dharmic principles, installed a Shivalinga at this very spot to purify the place and seek Lord Shiva's blessings. This act transformed Mrugavadhe into a sacred pilgrimage site.
The temple that houses this sacred Shivalinga was originally named Malahanikareshwar, which later came to be known as Mallikarjuna Temple. The name "Mallikarjuna" is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and represents Lord Shiva in his supreme form.
